Internal cover-ups gone belly up?

14/06/2013 11:29

It is interesting to read two front page articles in The Herald, Thursday 13 June, Top Liberal Democrats criticised in harassment investigation and University under fire for sexism hearing. Link below!

These organisations, the Lib Dems and Glasgow University have sought to deal with issues of sexual harassment and sexism through internal procedures possibly to avoid public scrutiny and maybe with some protectionism in mind but failing to such a miserable extent that it makes the front page!

It is even more interesting that the UCU (University and College Union) representatives have criticised Glasgow University and the internal disciplinary procedures operated and believes there is a sexist culture want to eliminate misogyny!

Possibly the UCU should look internally to their own members who, along with other “trade union members”, signed a statement in support of the SWP (Socialist Workers’ Party) and their Committees’ handling (again internally) of a rape allegation against a senior party official.

This particular case has created a serious division in the SWP where, as has been reported, Backing for the SWP Unite the Resistance campaign is, as one resigning member put it, evaporating”.

The EIS FELA (Further Education Lecturers' Association) Conference voted against affiliation to Unite the Resistance!

However the EIS AGM passed a resolution instructing EIS Council to affiliate to Unite the Resistance!

Hopefully the EIS Council now take a hard look at this resolution and any organisation that it ‘affiliates to’ to protect its position as stated by EIS General Secretary Larry Flanagan “The EIS has always been proud of its political independence which is highlighted by the fact we remain free from any party-political affiliation.” Herald Monday 3 June – Union defends invite to Russell

Let’s hope EIS Council see sense and that remains the case!
