Kelvin College - Stushie and Concerns over Contracts

28/03/2014 00:00

There seems to be some confusion at Kelvin College over HR issuing new contracts to Academic Staff with a requirement to sign and return within ten days!

The confusion comes from the contracts apparently varying from the previously agreed Terms and Conditions and that not all staff received these at the same time!

An email to staff from Human Resources included..

"The College is required to issue you with a Statement of Particulars in accordance with the Employment Rights Act 1996 to reflect the revised Terms and Conditions which were agreed with your Trade Union representatives for teaching staff.

We are aware that some of you who have received the document already have raised some issues with your Trade Union representative in relation to the wording in some areas. We are currently considering these issues.

When you do receive the document I would ask that you check your details, such as start date, etc. If you think any of the information is inaccurate please contact the Human Resources Department. ...... "

Some of the concerns raised included......

  • 24 hours class contact
  • 1 hour guidance per week for full time classes
  • Staff potentially to be forced to work two evenings a week as part of their normal working hours
  • The period of notice for many members of staff has now trebled to 12 weeks.
  • Suggestion that the copyright of any teaching material a lecturer uses in class suddenly becomes owned by the college regardless of where and when the material is produced.

Some interesting debate to be had on this one?
