Mary Barbour

Calling on Scottish Parliament to support calls for new college being created in the North of Glasgow to be named after Mary Barbour.

Why: This is an ideal opportunity to commemorate a working class woman activist.  Many educational institutions are named after prominent men. In a city where today 73% of school leavers do not go to university it would be fitting to recognise the role played by women like Mary Barbour who dedicated their lives to the struggle to improve opportunities for working class people. The right of such people to access adult education being as important now as it was in her day.  Attempts to brand the new college as an entrepreneurial business completely miss the real point of further education.  A college is for people not profit.
