Students ‘bullied over college merger plans’

Published: 26/04/2013

“NORTH-EAST students claim they are being “bullied” into accepting a controversial merger plan.

The proposed partnership between Banff and Buchan College and Aberdeen College has raised fears that crucial services, courses and jobs could be lost.

Last night, students at Fraserburgh and Peterhead, who have spoken out against the move, showed their opposition to associated proposals to join the two colleges’ student associations.”

Defiant college chiefs defend merger plans

Published: 30/04/2013

“THE heads of two north-east colleges have insisted a planned merger is the best move for the region – and predicted the institutions would be stronger together.

Principals at Banff and Buchan College and Aberdeen College also moved to allay fears among students that services, courses and jobs could be lost. And it was revealed that a new single centre could lead to an increase in engineering training to help address a skills gap in the oil and gas sector – with Fraserburgh earmarked as the potential base for additional schooling.

Backers of the plan believe it is the “best solution” under the Scottish Government’s education reform agenda and will help preserve a local presence and withstand further anticipated budget cuts in the sector.”

The Correlate finds in interesting to see merger opposition from students and welcomes further contributions on this merger.
