To sign or not to sign? Now that is a question!

28/11/2014 15:40

We hear that the EIS Branch Officials at one Glasgow College have expressed deep concern over Heads of Curriculum contracts that management issued to members affected without any consultation or negotiation!

Their deep concern arises as these posts/members are within the RPA!

We wonder at this position as we understood that there was a £5000 ‘carrot’ attached and that people had indeed signed these contracts!

As to the additional £150 for Senior Lecturers we have been asked as to why a salary increase for a relatively small group is added as an improvement to the basic lecturers’ terms and conditions and indeed we would ask as to why salaries are being included in the terms and conditions debate?
Interestingly we note that Heads of Department were offered and accepted an increase apparently of £5000 when signing their new contracts and we look to what changes are in place for their roles and remits!

This leads us to the West End question.....
Only those Heads in post voted for the change while other members were never given the opportunity to vote on the new Head of Department salary and conditions offer (and we wonder why as the current holders are only in temporary possession of the posts) – now will Heads of Department have a vote on the current T&Cs offer? Appears to be the case!
Mind you one Head apparently indicated abstention! :o)

The expression of deep concern along with “Management accepted our stance to continue to urge anyone faced with a new contract not to sign it” will go a long way in providing those members affected and indeed all members with a real feeling of action being taken on their behalf in comparison with Ayrshire College where they have moved to industrial action!
